About revision surgery

Reconstructive skills for cosmetic problems

Most cosmetic surgery goes well. But sometimes the result is not what was hoped for, something changes over time, or a complication needs putting right. Revision surgery is usually more complex than the first operation: there is scar tissue, the blood supply may have changed, and there is less spare tissue to work with.

This is where a reconstructive background matters. In the NHS, Mr Kumar regularly deals with complex reconstruction, including the head and neck after skin cancer, where tissue is limited and every decision counts. The same skills of planning, moving tissue and managing difficult healing carry straight across to revision cosmetic surgery.

Mr Kumar takes on revision cases selectively, including for people who had surgery abroad. He will always give you an honest view of what can realistically be improved, what cannot, and whether now is the right time.

Revision surgery can help with

  • Breast implant problems: hardening (capsular contracture), rippling, rupture, poor position or a size you are unhappy with
  • Asymmetry after breast surgery
  • Tummy tuck problems: “dog ears”, a high or uneven scar, an unnatural belly button or remaining loose skin
  • Wide, raised, tight or poorly placed scars
  • Dents and irregularities after liposuction or body contouring
  • Problems after cosmetic surgery abroad

What it won’t do

  • Guarantee a perfect result: revision aims for a clear improvement
  • Usually be done before the tissues have settled, which often takes 6 to 12 months
  • Remove scars completely: they can be improved, not erased

Common revision procedures

What can be put right

Every revision is planned individually after a thorough examination and, where possible, a look at the notes from your previous operation.

Breast

Breast implant revision

Replacing or removing implants, treating capsular contracture, correcting implant position, or combining with an uplift where the breasts have dropped.

Body

Tummy tuck revision

Correcting dog ears at the ends of the scar, lowering or straightening a scar, refining the belly button, or removing remaining loose skin.

  • Best for: an uneven scar, dog ears or remaining loose skin
  • Tummy tuck
Scars

Scar correction

Wide, raised, tight or badly placed scars can be re-cut, re-orientated or released, often followed by laser or IPL to improve texture and colour.

Abroad

Problems after surgery abroad

Assessment and planned correction after cosmetic surgery overseas, from wound problems to results you are unhappy with. Urgent problems need urgent care first; correction follows once you have healed.

Your journey

Your step-by-step journey

Your journey starts the moment you get in touch. From your first enquiry to your final check-up, you deal with the same small team, and you will always feel listened to, informed and never rushed.

01Step one

Get in touch

Call, email or send an enquiry. Our team replies promptly and personally, and finds a time and clinic that suit you.

There is no pressure and no sales script. Tell us a little about what prompted you to get in touch, and we will make sure your consultation is with the right person for you.

02Step two

Consultation

An unhurried, face-to-face appointment with Mr Kumar himself, who will be your surgeon from start to finish.

He listens to what you would like to change, examines you, explains every option, including non-surgical ones and doing nothing, and gives you an honest view of the likely result.

03Step three

Time to decide

You receive a written plan, a clear quote and your patient guide, then take as long as you need.

A second consultation is included before surgery, and there is a cooling-off period of at least two weeks. Bring someone with you, ask anything, and change your mind at any point.

04Step four

Day of treatment

Most revision surgery is done under general anaesthetic, although smaller scar revisions can be done under local. A revision can take longer than the original operation because of scar tissue. Many people go home the same day or after one night, depending on the operation.

He will see you beforehand to go through the plan and answer last-minute questions, and you will have clear instructions and a number to call once you go home.

05Step five

Aftercare and follow-up

Reviews at each stage of your recovery, with support 24 hours a day whenever you need it.

Follow-up appointments are included in your package price, and continue until you have healed and are happy with how things have settled.

Recovery

Healing, step by step

Everyone heals at their own pace. This is a typical recovery, and Mr Kumar will give you a personal plan.

Week 1

Rest at home and wear any support garment as advised.

Weeks 2 to 3

Wound checks. Many people are back at desk work after one to three weeks, depending on the operation.

Weeks 4 to 6

A gradual return to normal activity and exercise.

3 to 12 months

Swelling settles and scars mature.

Safety

Risks and staying safe

All surgery carries some risk. Mr Kumar will go through these with you in detail, and the patient guide covers them in full, so you can make an informed decision.

Lowering your risk

FAQs

Your questions, answered

How long should I wait before revision surgery?

Usually 6 to 12 months after the first operation, so swelling has settled and scars have matured. Urgent problems such as infection are treated straight away.

Do you treat problems after surgery abroad?

Yes, selectively. Mr Kumar will assess you, ask for your operation notes and implant details, and give an honest view of what can be done and when. If you have an urgent problem, such as fever, spreading redness or a wound opening, seek urgent care first.

Will the NHS fix problems after private or overseas surgery?

The NHS treats urgent complications, but correcting a cosmetic result is not usually funded.

Is revision surgery more expensive than the first operation?

Often, because it can be more complex and take longer. You receive a written quote after your consultation.

Should I go back to my original surgeon?

You can, and many surgeons review their own patients. If you would like an independent second opinion, Mr Kumar is happy to see you.

Can scars be removed completely?

No, but they can often be made narrower, flatter, better placed and less noticeable, especially when surgery is combined with laser or IPL.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Any operation notes, your implant details (often in an implant card or passport), photos from before and after your first operation, and a list of your medicines.

Is it covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatment is not usually covered by health insurance. Where there is a medical reason, it may be. Insurers will need Mr Kumar’s full name, Siva Kumar Veeramani, and GMC number 6114710.
