About surgery after weight loss

A plan for your whole body

Losing a large amount of weight is a huge achievement, but the skin often can’t shrink back. It can hang in folds on the tummy, waist, back, arms, thighs and breasts, causing rubbing, rashes and difficulty with clothes and exercise.

This applies whether you lost weight after a gastric sleeve or bypass, with weight-loss injections, or through diet and exercise. Fast weight loss with injections is now one of the most common reasons people ask about loose skin.

Mr Kumar starts by understanding which areas bother you most. He then plans one operation, or a series of operations a few months apart, so that each stage is safe and the results fit together.

Your general health, nutrition and a stable weight matter as much as the surgery itself, and are checked before anything is booked. Read more about weight-loss injections and body contouring surgery.

Surgery after weight loss can help with

  • An overhanging apron of skin on the lower tummy
  • Loose skin around the waist, hips, back and buttocks
  • Hanging skin on the upper arms and inner thighs
  • Deflated, low breasts, or loose skin on the male chest
  • Rashes, rubbing and hygiene problems in skin folds
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit, or exercising comfortably

What it won’t do

  • Replace weight loss: you need to be close to your target weight first
  • Remove skin without scars: the scars are long, although usually placed where clothes hide them
  • Stop future changes if your weight goes up again

Area by area

Matched to the areas that bother you

Most people need more than one procedure. Mr Kumar explains which ones suit you, which can safely be combined, and the order that makes most sense.

Tummy tuck, fleur-de-lis or panniculectomy

A tummy tuck removes loose skin and fat from the lower tummy and repairs separated muscles. A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck adds a vertical scar to tighten the waist from side to side as well. A panniculectomy removes an overhanging apron of skin only, mainly to ease rashes and discomfort.

  • Best for: loose or overhanging skin on the tummy
  • Tummy tuck

Lower body lift

Also called a belt lipectomy or 360 lift. Loose skin is removed all the way around the waist, lifting the tummy, hips, outer thighs and buttocks in one operation.

  • Best for: loose skin around the waist, hips and buttocks

Upper body lift and bra-line back lift

Removes rolls of loose skin on the upper back and sides, with the scar placed along the bra line. It is often combined with a breast uplift.

  • Best for: back rolls and loose skin below the arms

Arm and thigh lifts

Remove hanging skin from the upper arms or inner thighs, with the scar placed along the inside of the limb.

Breasts and chest

A breast uplift, with or without implants, restores shape and volume after weight loss. In men, chest surgery removes loose skin and any remaining fat.

Face and neck

Rapid weight loss can leave the face looking hollow and the neck loose. A neck lift, facelift or fat grafting can restore a fresher, fuller look.

Your journey

Your step-by-step journey

Your journey starts the moment you get in touch. From your first enquiry to your final check-up, you deal with the same small team, and you will always feel listened to, informed and never rushed.

01Step one

Get in touch

Call, email or send an enquiry. Our team replies promptly and personally, and finds a time and clinic that suit you.

There is no pressure and no sales script. Tell us a little about what prompted you to get in touch, and we will make sure your consultation is with the right person for you.

02Step two

Consultation

An unhurried, face-to-face appointment with Mr Kumar himself, who will be your surgeon from start to finish.

He listens to what you would like to change, examines you, explains every option, including non-surgical ones and doing nothing, and gives you an honest view of the likely result.

03Step three

Time to decide

You receive a written plan, a clear quote and your patient guide, then take as long as you need.

A second consultation is included before surgery, and there is a cooling-off period of at least two weeks. Bring someone with you, ask anything, and change your mind at any point.

04Step four

Day of treatment

Most operations are done under general anaesthetic and take two to five hours, depending on the areas treated. You usually stay in hospital for one to three nights. You wear a compression garment afterwards, and small drains are sometimes used for a few days.

He will see you beforehand to go through the plan and answer last-minute questions, and you will have clear instructions and a number to call once you go home.

05Step five

Aftercare and follow-up

Reviews at each stage of your recovery, with support 24 hours a day whenever you need it.

Follow-up appointments are included in your package price, and continue until you have healed and are happy with how things have settled.

Recovery

Healing, step by step

Everyone heals at their own pace. This is a typical recovery, and Mr Kumar will give you a personal plan.

Week 1

Rest at home with help. Walk little and often, and wear your compression garment.

Weeks 2 to 3

Wound checks. Most people return to desk work after two to four weeks.

Weeks 4 to 6

A gradual return to driving and normal activities, with no heavy lifting.

6 weeks onwards

Return to exercise. Scars slowly soften and fade over the next year.

Safety

Risks and staying safe

All surgery carries some risk. Mr Kumar will go through these with you in detail, and the patient guide covers them in full, so you can make an informed decision.

Possible risks

  • Slow wound healing, especially where scars meet
  • Fluid collecting under the skin (seroma)
  • Bleeding or a collection of blood (haematoma)
  • Infection
  • Noticeable or stretched scars
  • Some loose skin remaining or returning
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs
  • Numb or altered skin sensation

Lowering your risk

  • Your weight should be stable for at least 6 to 12 months, and usually 12 to 18 months after bariatric surgery
  • Aim for a BMI as close as possible to your target, ideally under 30 to 32
  • Eat well, with enough protein, iron and vitamins, which helps healing
  • Stop smoking and vaping at least 6 weeks before and after surgery
  • Tell Mr Kumar if you take weight-loss injections, as they may need to be paused before an anaesthetic
  • Tell us about all medicines and supplements, especially blood thinners

FAQs

Your questions, answered

When can I have surgery after losing weight?

Usually once your weight has been stable for at least 6 to 12 months, or 12 to 18 months after a gastric sleeve or bypass. Surgery too early can mean more loose skin later.

Will the NHS remove loose skin after weight loss?

Only rarely. Most NHS areas fund skin removal only in exceptional circumstances, with strict criteria such as a stable, healthy weight and significant medical problems. Your GP can tell you the local policy. Most people choose to pay privately.

Can I have surgery while taking weight-loss injections?

Yes, once your weight has settled, but tell Mr Kumar and your anaesthetist, as these medicines may need to be paused before surgery to make the anaesthetic safer.

Which operation should I have first?

Usually the area that bothers you most, often the tummy. Operations are commonly staged a few months apart, and some can safely be combined. Mr Kumar will plan the order with you.

How long are the scars?

Longer than after most cosmetic operations, because more skin is removed. They are placed where underwear or clothing usually covers them, and fade over 12 to 18 months.

What is the difference between a body lift and a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck treats the front of the tummy. A lower body lift continues all the way around the waist, also lifting the hips, outer thighs and buttocks.

How much does skin removal surgery cost?

The guide price starts from £4,500. Your final fee depends on your treatment plan and choice of hospital, and is confirmed in a written quote after consultation. Self-pay consultations cost £250.

Is it covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatment is not usually covered by health insurance. Where there is a medical reason, it may be. Insurers will need Mr Kumar’s full name, Siva Kumar Veeramani, and GMC number 6114710.
