What is lower eyelid surgery?

Treating eye bags at the source

Bags under the eyes are usually caused by fat bulging forward as the supporting tissues weaken, together with loose, crinkled skin. They can make you look tired however much you sleep.

Lower blepharoplasty removes or repositions this fat and tightens the skin. The incision is placed just beneath the lashes, or sometimes inside the eyelid, so the scar is hidden in the natural lines of the eye.

It is a more delicate operation than upper eyelid surgery and is usually performed under general anaesthetic.

Lower eyelid surgery can help with

  • Puffy bags under the eyes
  • Loose or crinkled lower eyelid skin
  • A tired look that does not improve with rest
  • A hollow or shadowed groove under the eye

What it won’t do

  • Remove dark pigment under the eyes
  • Remove crow’s feet completely
  • Treat hooded upper eyelids (upper eyelid surgery)

Options

The right approach for your eyes

Skin and fat removal

An incision under the lashes allows excess fat to be removed and loose skin to be tightened.

  • Best for: bags with excess, crinkled skin

Fat repositioning

Rather than removing it, the fat is moved to fill the hollow groove beneath the bag, for a smoother transition to the cheek.

  • Best for: bags with a hollow groove below

Transconjunctival approach

Fat is treated through the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible scar on the skin.

  • Best for: bags with good skin quality

Consultation

An unhurried, face-to-face appointment with Mr Kumar himself, who will be your surgeon from start to finish.

Time to decide

You receive a written plan, a clear quote and your patient guide, then take as long as you need.

A second consultation is included before surgery, and there is a cooling-off period of at least two weeks. Bring someone with you, ask anything, and change your mind at any point.

04Step four

Day of treatment

The operation takes one and a half to two hours under general anaesthetic. Some people go home the same day; others stay one night.

He will see you beforehand to go through the plan and answer last-minute questions, and you will have clear instructions and a number to call once you go home.

05Step five

Aftercare and follow-up

Reviews at each stage of your recovery, with support 24 hours a day whenever you need it.

Follow-up appointments are included in your package price, and continue until you have healed and are happy with how things have settled. Any stitches are removed within a week.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Is lower eyelid surgery more complex than upper?

Yes. The lower lid supports the eye, so the surgery needs careful technique to avoid pulling the lid down. That is why it is usually done under general anaesthetic.

Will there be a visible scar?

The scar sits just under the lashes and is usually very difficult to see once healed. With the inside approach there is no skin scar at all.

When can I wear contact lenses?

Usually after about two weeks, once swelling has settled.

How long do the results last?

Removing or repositioning the fat gives a long-lasting result. The skin will still age naturally.

Lower eyelid surgery: what is the guide price?

The guide price starts from £4,200. Your final fee depends on your treatment plan and choice of hospital, and is confirmed in a written quote after consultation. Self-pay consultations cost £250.

Is it covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatment is not usually covered by health insurance. Where there is a medical reason, it may be. Insurers will need Mr Kumar’s full name, Siva Kumar Veeramani, and GMC number 6114710.
