What is breast asymmetry?

Very common, and treatable

Almost everyone has some difference between their breasts, in size, shape or the position of the nipple. Breast asymmetry usually means a difference that shows in clothes or a bra, or that affects how you feel about your body.

It most often develops during puberty, when one breast grows more than the other. It can also follow pregnancy and breastfeeding or weight change, or be linked to tuberous breasts, Poland syndrome, a difference in the chest wall, or earlier surgery or injury.

Breast asymmetry is harmless in itself, but a new change in one breast, such as a lump, swelling or a change in the skin or nipple, should always be checked by your GP first.

Correction is planned for each breast separately. Mr Kumar may enlarge the smaller breast, reduce or lift the larger one, or combine these, using implants or your own fat, aiming for breasts that look balanced in a bra and in clothes.

Breast asymmetry correction can help with

  • One breast noticeably larger than the other
  • Breasts of different shapes
  • Nipples at different heights or of different sizes
  • Asymmetry after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight change
  • Difficulty finding bras and swimwear that fit

What it won’t do

  • Make your breasts perfectly identical
  • Stop future changes with pregnancy, weight change or ageing

Options

Matched to each breast

Most common

Enlarging the smaller breast

An implant or your own fat increases the size of the smaller breast to match the other. Sometimes both breasts have implants of different sizes.

Reducing the larger breast

Excess tissue and skin are removed from the larger breast, and it is reshaped and lifted to match the smaller one.

Lifting one or both breasts

An uplift raises a lower breast and nipple, and can be combined with a small implant or a reduction to balance size and shape.

  • Best for: breasts sitting at different heights, often after pregnancy
  • Breast uplift

Fat transfer

Fat taken by liposuction from another area is injected into the smaller breast. It suits smaller differences and may need more than one session.

  • Best for: mild asymmetry, or people who prefer not to have implants
  • Fat transfer

01Step one

Get in touch

Call, email or send an enquiry. Our team replies promptly and personally, and finds a time and clinic that suit you.

There is no pressure and no sales script. Tell us a little about what prompted you to get in touch, and we will make sure your consultation is with the right person for you.

02Step two

Consultation

An unhurried, face-to-face appointment with Mr Kumar himself, who will be your surgeon from start to finish.

He listens to what you would like to change, examines you, explains every option, including non-surgical ones and doing nothing, and gives you an honest view of the likely result.

03Step three

Time to decide

You receive a written plan, a clear quote and your patient guide, then take as long as you need.

A second consultation is included before surgery, and there is a cooling-off period of at least two weeks. Bring someone with you, ask anything, and change your mind at any point.

04Step four

Day of treatment

The operation is done under general anaesthetic and usually takes one to three hours, depending on what each breast needs. Many people go home the same day, and some stay one night.

He will see you beforehand to go through the plan and answer last-minute questions, and you will have clear instructions and a number to call once you go home.

05Step five

Aftercare and follow-up

Reviews at each stage of your recovery, with support 24 hours a day whenever you need it.

Follow-up appointments are included in your package price, and continue until you have healed and are happy with how things have settled.

Recovery

Healing, step by step

Everyone heals at their own pace. This is a typical recovery, and Mr Kumar will give you a personal plan.

Days 1 to 3

Tightness and discomfort across the chest, controlled with painkillers. Wear your support bra day and night.

Week 1

Most people return to desk work after 7 to 10 days. Avoid lifting and stretching your arms above your head.

Week 2

Wound check. Driving once you can wear a seatbelt and make an emergency stop comfortably.

Weeks 4 to 6

Gradual return to exercise. Keep sleeping on your back and wearing your bra day and night for 6 weeks.

3 to 12 months

The breasts soften and settle, and the scars mature and fade.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Is it normal for breasts to be different sizes?

Yes. Most women have some difference in size or shape between their breasts, and a difference of up to a cup size is common. Correction is only worth considering if the difference bothers you.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Most often, one breast simply grows more than the other during puberty. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight change, tuberous breasts, Poland syndrome, a difference in the chest wall and earlier surgery can all play a part.

Can breast asymmetry be corrected without implants?

Sometimes. A larger breast can be reduced or lifted to match the smaller one, and smaller differences can be balanced with your own fat. Mr Kumar will explain which options suit you.

Is breast asymmetry correction available on the NHS?

Only in limited circumstances, usually where the difference is large, and the rules vary by area. Most people have it privately. Your GP can tell you about the policy where you live.

Will I need surgery on both breasts?

Not always. Sometimes only one breast needs surgery, but often the best balance comes from treating both, for example an uplift on one side and a small implant on the other.

How much does breast asymmetry correction cost?

It depends on what each breast needs. You will be given a fixed price after your consultation, and the guide price is shown at the top of this page.

Breast asymmetry correction: what is the guide price?

The guide price starts from £6,500. Your final fee depends on your treatment plan and choice of hospital, and is confirmed in a written quote after consultation. Self-pay consultations cost £250.

Is it covered by insurance?

Cosmetic treatment is not usually covered by health insurance. Where there is a medical reason, it may be. Insurers will need Mr Kumar’s full name, Siva Kumar Veeramani, and GMC number 6114710.
