About cysts
Removing the cyst and its lining
Cysts, such as epidermoid or sebaceous cysts, are sac-like lumps under the skin. Most are harmless, but they can be unsightly, uncomfortable, or become infected and painful.
To reduce the chance of the cyst returning, the whole sac is removed through a small incision under local anaesthetic, and the skin closed with stitches.
If a cyst is currently infected, it is usually best to treat the infection first and remove the cyst once it has settled.
Cyst removal can help with
- Lumps that are growing or unsightly
- Cysts that keep becoming infected
- Discomfort from pressure or clothing
- Confirming what a lump is

Mr Kumar is an exemplary surgeon and a kind and caring human being. Before, through and after the procedure, he explained what he was doing and gave good advice, at the time and then in writing, about wound care. He also arranged for a follow up appointment for a nurse to check my progress. …
