About skin tags
Harmless, but often annoying
Skin tags are small, soft, skin-coloured growths that hang from the skin, often on the neck, armpits, eyelids, groin or under the breasts. They are harmless, but can catch on clothing or jewellery and become sore.
Most tags are removed by shave excision, where the tag is numbed and removed flush with the skin, or with CO₂ laser, which removes the tag precisely with very little bleeding. Very small tags can sometimes be frozen instead.
The NHS does not usually remove skin tags for cosmetic reasons. Mr Kumar checks each lesion first, and anything that looks unusual is sent to the laboratory.
Skin tag removal can help with
- Tags that catch on clothing or jewellery
- Tags on the eyelids, neck or underarms
- Tags that become irritated or bleed
- Improving your appearance
Techniques
Two ways to remove skin tags
Mr Kumar will recommend the best method for the size and position of your skin tags. Both are done under local anaesthetic, usually in one visit.
Shave excision
The tag is numbed and removed level with the skin. Any bleeding is sealed with gentle cautery. No stitches are needed.
- Best for: larger tags, or tags with a stalk
CO₂ laser
The laser removes the tag layer by layer, sealing tiny blood vessels as it goes. Well suited to small or multiple tags, and to delicate areas such as the eyelids.
- Best for: small or multiple tags, and the eyelids, neck and underarms

FAQs
Your questions, answered
Does it hurt?
The area is numbed with a small injection or numbing cream first, so you feel very little. Afterwards it may feel slightly tender for a day or two.
Will they grow back?
A removed tag does not usually come back, but new ones can develop over time.
Can several be removed at once?
Yes, usually at the same appointment.
Should I remove them myself?
No. Home removal risks bleeding, infection and scarring, and a lesion that is not a skin tag could be missed.
Is laser or shave excision better?
Both work well. Shave excision suits larger tags with a stalk, while CO₂ laser is precise and suits small or multiple tags and delicate areas. Mr Kumar will advise on the best option for you.
How much does skin tag removal cost?
The guide price starts from £395. Your final fee depends on your treatment plan and choice of hospital, and is confirmed in a written quote after consultation. Self-pay consultations cost £250.
Is it covered by insurance?
Treatment for a medical concern is usually covered by private medical insurance, subject to your policy. Your insurer will need Mr Kumar’s full name, Siva Kumar Veeramani, and GMC number 6114710. Self-pay is also available.
